Growing Practices:
Latin Name: Pyrus pyrifolia
Days to Maturity: n/a
Description:
This is a prolific producing wild pear I found in Havana, Florida. It is like a large variation of the callery pear. The pears are 1-2 inches in diameter and highly astringent until they turn brown. Once brown they are soft and taste like a rich pear jam with few seeds and some grainy-ness. The tree shows no disease issues and could be used for incorporating into perry blends, wild-life plots, sauced once brown, or used for a variety of culinary purposes. They began falling off the tree at the end of October here. Pear seeds require cold, moist stratification for 30-60 days and may take 5+ years to fruit. This is a wild harvested crop of seeds that I have not grown myself, nor have I done seed testing since it is a wild sample and requires stratification.
