Growing Practices:
Latin Name: Vigna umbellata
Days to Maturity: 120+
Description:
Rice Bean, or known as Talipan Bean in the Philippines, is a small bean from a subtropical or tropical legume that thrives in heat and rain. They are immensely productive if protected from bunnies and deer during the vegetative stage and grown on a trellis. They do not do well without a trellis. I have grown these with good success in North Florida, but I note that they don't produce abundantly until late in the year, often waiting for cool weather before flowering profusely. I have grown a variety that will flower profusely all summer, so I am unsure how well these will do in areas without long summers. They are used similar to an adzuki or mung bean. A single plant can grow into a large, multi-branching vine and so seeds can be planted 6-12 inches apart. Both the yellow and red varieties I offer are landraces and will display some variance in seed and pod color.
