Growing Practices: No Pesticides No Herbicides No Fungicides No Synthetic Fertilizers

Latin Name: Solanum lycopersicum

Days to Maturity: 60-70

Description:

This tomato was one of the first late blight resistant tomatoes when developed by the WV Agricultural Experiment Station in 1963. Dr. Mannon Gallegly intercrossed rare wild tomatoes with commercial tomatoes to create the high disease resistance that this tomato holds. Sturdy compact plants are very reliable and fruits are medium sized meaty slicers (6-8 oz) with excellent complex flavor. Also resistant to fusarium wilt (race 1) and verticillium wilt. I shared these seeds with a family member who lives in rural Papua New Guinea where late blight has always killed any large tomatoes in the village before fruiting. This variety (and related variety Mountaineer Delight) held up to the disease, and now she and the natives in the village are enjoying large tomatoes for the first time! Indeterminate. Seed produced in Morgantown, WV. Germination 99% 12-3-2023.

Growing Tips:

Sow indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Cover lightly with potting mix and provide a warm place for germination. Transplant into 2-4 inch pots after first true leaves have formed and provide good lighting. Transplant outdoors after soil has warmed and space 24 inches apart. Provide stakes or cages and remove suckers below first flower cluster for best fruit quality.
