Description:

Cucurbita moschata – 120 days – Certified Organic
Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm
New release! Developed by Edmund Frost from crosses between South Anna Butternut (75%) and Chinese Tropical Pumpkin (25%) starting in 2017. The concept for this project was to create and identify a promising (and broad) genetic base from which to select an improved regionally adapted butternut. This cross has consistently stood out above a handful of others made using South Anna. Edmund’s selection goals have included improved keeping quality, more concentrated fruit set, and higher yields - while maintaining the excellent eating quality, downy mildew resistance and general resilience of South Anna. Like South Anna, Bakers Branch Butternut is an excellent dessert quality squash with high brix and dry matter content. It has slightly finer texture, not quite as deep orange interior color, and slightly different flavor (more nutty than floral) compared to South Anna. Fruits average 2.5-3 pounds. Exterior color is a deep tan with a unique pink hue (likely coming from Chinese Tropical Pumpkin). Bakers Branch is the name of a creek, a neighborhood and a road near Twin Oaks Seed Farm's main fields. Selection and improvement for this new open pollinated variety are ongoing. 203 seeds/ounce. Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm.

Ask a Question About Bakers Branch Butternut - Certified Organic (Pre-Order)

  • Answer this question

I grew South Anna in 2022, got 2 fruits. In 2023 in exactly the same area, exactly the same care, produced about 20 mature Trombincini. I don't like Tromboncini all that well, but it fed the goats and chickens and ducks and we ate some too. At least it wasn't offensive, like say, those horrible stringy Banana squash they growl in Georgia.
