Story of this Seed:

Grow your very own indigo! With these seeds you can easily grow enough leaves to fresh dye many many garments or process the leaves for their indigo pigment for deeper blues with vat dyeing.

Join the long standing tradition of growing your own blue! With this plant you can either dye with just the fresh picked leaves or ferment them to extract indigo pigment for further processing into an indigo vat. Either way you can get a beautiful spectrum of blues to adorn yourself or your home!

These seeds were grown with regenerative and organic growing practices at Treiber Farms in NY, harvested in October 2021

Growing Tips:

Plant indoors at least 6” apart in a pot with good drainage, watering when soil feels dry 1” down. Place pot in a window with at least 5 hours of direct sunlight.
For outdoor planting, start seeds indoors 3-6 weeks prior to last frost date, or direct seed when danger of frost is past. Transplant strong seedlings 8-12” apart in at least partial sun. This plant is hardy and does not require special watering or disease management. When the plant is over a foot tall and robust with multiple stems it is safe to cut to harvest leaves for dyeing. Leaves can be stripped off of the cut stems and then placed partially in water. The stems will grow roots in the water and can then be replanted! Seeding early will allow for at least 2-3 harvests throughout the summer and fall. Do not harvest past early fall if you want to let them flower and create mature seeds for saving.
