Large Red Teardrop Rocoto Manzano Pepper Seeds – Rare Capsicum pubescens – Black Seeds – Hot Perennial Pepper 24 seeds per order. Free Shipping
Introducing our Large Red Teardrop Rocoto, another distinctive variety of Capsicum pubescens grown here at The Constant Gardener.
This unusual pepper produces beautiful red fruits with a plump, elongated teardrop shape. Compared with our regular Red Teardrop Manzano, these peppers are generally larger and fuller, with some attractive variations in shape.
Like other true rocoto peppers, Capsicum pubescens is known for its distinctive dark seeds, hairy foliage, beautiful flowers, and ability to grow as a long-lived perennial in suitable climates.
We grow several different rocoto and manzano pepper varieties and harvest our own seed.
Botanical name: Capsicum pubescens
Variety name: Large Red Teardrop (our descriptive grower's name)
Mature fruit color: Red
Fruit shape: Large, elongated teardrop
Heat: Hot
A wonderful addition for collectors of unusual rocoto and manzano peppers!
Story of this Seed:
Directions for planting Manzano (rocoto) seeds
In a small pot, add regular fertile garden soil, add 12 seeds per pot, and cover lightly with soil (1/4” max). Water: keep in a semi-shaded, warm area (65-75°F). Water when the top starts to dry out. That depends on what time of year you plant your seeds. Seeds will sprout in 10 to 24 days. Be patient as they take longer than usual to germinate. Plants grow slowly at first. Keeping in direct sunlight 5-10 hours a day is necessary. After a month or up to 6 weeks or so transplant each seedling to its pot. Add organic fertilizer, water daily when the weather is warm, but do not over-water. The plants should be kept outside. Transplant to a permanent location when plants reach 7” or taller. Plant in a deep hole enriched with rotted manure, leaf mold, compost, or other soil-building fertilizer.
These plants grow well outside year-round in the Bay Area. Give them lots of room and light. They will grow 8 feet tall and almost as wide. Harvest when the fruit colors up. Peppers give several crops a year, and plants will live for 10-20 years or longer.
