About the Farm
Salt of the Earth Seed Company's farm is Invincible Summer Farms located in Southold, NY. Invincible Summer Farms specializes in growing rare, unique, and endangered heirloom and open pollinated vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Their seasonal produce is available direct to consumers via CSA and an on-site farmstand, as well as heirloom seedlings in the spring.
In addition to providing fresh produce to the public and fine restaurants, our primary mission of preserving biodiversity is fulfilled as seed savers with the maintenance of our seed bank with well over 6,000 crop varieties to date. As an example, the farm grows over 350 different tomato varieties every single year.
Biodiversity is a key to not only changing food systems, but keeping food traditions alive.
Invincible Summer Farms collaborates with other international growers and breeders to bring the best tasting, best looking and hardiest vegetables to the region. We actively work on our own breeding projects as well as provide assistance to others in germplasm maintenance.
Our Commitment to Quality Seed
We have signed the Safe Seed Pledge:
“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative,
We pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants.
The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”
Our Growing Practices
All seed we offer is currently being grown by Invincible Summer Farms in Southold, NY. Future partnerships with other seed producers will also have farm of origin labels because we believe you should know exactly where your seed is coming from. We do not buy and then re-sell seed.
The seed we offer for sale is the same stock for fresh vegetables we produce that is being eaten and enjoyed by our customers, fine dining establishments and processors. Meaning, we grow fresh produce, hear feedback from customers and chefs, and then save the seed from outstanding, rare varieties.
Moreover, we do not use any GMO, hybrid (F1), seeds with PVP's or patented seed for sale. All seed is open pollinated or heirloom and made to be freely shared and improved upon as humans have been doing for centuries.
Our Seed Farming Experience
We have been seeds saver for over 15 years.
Regional Adaptation
We recognize the original breeders of new or novel varieties by giving them credit in seed descriptions as well as voluntarily paying them a royalty for their work. To increase biodiversity and keep innovation open for everyone, our varieties for the sale to the public must also be open and free to use and we do not consent using our germplasm in any patenting structure. We not only maintain heirloom varieties for sale, re-select and improve varieties, but breed new varieties for resiliency and taste.
