FLORIDA MAPLE (Acer saccharum subsp. Floridanum)

Heirloom/ organic seeds. . The seeds come from a tree growing here for over 50 years.

Native to Florida and other parts of the southeast per the internet.

This is a medium growing maple that is hardy and presents beautiful yellow/orange/reddish change of the season leaf colors. At other times of the year the leaves are a vibrant green. The flowers are small and inconspicuous.

Scientific name: Acer floridanum
Pronunciation: AY-ser flor-i-da-num
Common name(s): Florida maple, southern sugar maple, hammock maple
Family: sapindaceae
USDA hardiness zones: 6B through 9A
Origin: native to southeastern United States

Some sources report that this maple is a subspecies of the sugar maple. Hardiness zones average 6-9.

This maple is deciduous and can reach 50-60 feet but they normally top off at 20-30 feet. The canopy is round or oval. The tree can be used for sap but it does not produce any great quantity.

Great shade tree and can be used either as a stand alone specimen or in a mixed landscape. Great for the wildlife. Several species of birds and squirrels use the tree for nesting and consume the seeds.

The seeds are sometimes called helicopter seeds. They are winged with a small embryo at the base. When the wind blows them they can twirl and often end up standing upright in the grass. Great seed gathering project for the kids.

The seeds start off as a vibrant reddish color and will dry to a soft brown.

Dropped leaves can be used as mulch and/or composted. Great to play in.

This is a great tree for a memoriam or remembrance tree. Plant the tree at the time of a birth and watch it grow with the child. Or use the tree as a remembrance tree for someone who has passed. Perhaps put a plaque or bench under the tree.

Thank you

Story of this Seed:

Great shade tree. I cannot remember a time when there was not a maple or two in our family's landscape. We spent hours playing in and around the trees as children.

Growing Tips:

Pre soaking the seeds in warm water for several hours may improve germination rate. Plant in pre-moistened light potting soil. It does not matter if the wing stays on or falls off. The embryo is the small round knob at the end. Place in a warm, well lit location and do not allow the soil to dry out. Once the second set of leaves (true leaves) appear and seedling is desirable size, seedling can be transplanted into larger container or directly into the ground.

    • Hi, the recommended hardiness zone is a warm 6 to 9. You may be a little too cold but since you have the tree, certainly try. Find a spot in your yard that is the warmest exposure. Perhaps with a cold block from existing trees for protection. If possible, wait until early spring to plant the tree in the ground. Since it is deciduous, it may be fine. You might contact your native plant assoc. to see which variety of maple is cold hardy for your area. Good luck and happy gardening.
