ALAMO VINE (MERREMIA DISSECTA) DAY BLOOMING MORNING GLORY

Beautiful fast growing, twining vine. Part of the morning glory family, but this vine blooms in the daytime.
The vine produces a white flower with a rose to burgundy colored throat.
Alamo vine grows well in planting zones 8 - 11.
This vine looks great on a trellis or fence. The flowers smell a little like almonds.
Alamo vine is great for bees and other pollinating insects. The vine provides nectar for butterflies.
The foliage and roots of the plant have a folklore history of being used for medicine and food. Please do your own research if interested in this aspect of the plant.
Tender perennial or annual according to hardiness zone.
NOTE - the seeds are reported to be toxic, as with several varieties in the Morning Glory family.

Alamo vine is a perennial and likes full sun and well draining soil. The vine is deciduous in most locations. Light pruning will help to keep the vine in shape.

The seeds are small, hard, dark colored and roundish.

Thank you for your interest and happy gardening.

Story of this Seed:

This vine is another great hand me down from a friend. She originally got the seeds from her grandmother. We have been growing it for about 15 years now. Even the seed pod is neat looking.

Growing Tips:

Planting suggestions. The seeds are very hard. Soaking the seeds for a couple of hours or overnight in room temperature water may be of benefit to germination. Scarification also helps in the germination process.

Press seeds into pre moistened potting mix of your choice. Lightly cover with soil and press gently to make sure there is good seed to soil contact. Place in a warm, well lit location. Do not let soil dry completely out.

Transfer to larger pot or into the ground (timing based on your planting zone) when seedlings have obtained several sets of true leaves or when plant is several inches tall.

Like most morning glory vines, a trellis or fence to offer support would be great.
