Enterolobium contortisiliquum, Mimosa contortisiliqua
Orelha-de-macaco, Earpod Tree, PACARA

Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Mimosoideae

NON EDIBLE

FAST GROWTH RATE, LARGE TREE, GREAT SHADE TREE. DECIDUOUS, ROUNDED CANOPY. GROWN FOR ITS SHADE AND ORNAMENTAL USES. PRODUCES WHITE FLOWERS IN MID SPRING FOLLOWED BY PODS FULL OF SEEDS. THE PODS ARE HISTORICALLY USED IN CRAFTS.

THE TREE IS ALSO USED IN SOME CULTURES AS A SOURCE OF LUMBER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS.

NON EDIBLE

SEEDS ARE SMALL AND HARD. THE SEEDS VIABILITY LAST A LONG TIME, BUT THEY ARE DORMANT AND BENEFIT FROM A LITTLE PREP WORK PRIOR TO PLANTING

SEEDS NEED TO BE SOAKED FOR 12-14 HOURS. SCARIFYING HAS PROVED TO BE OF HELP. RUB THE SIDE OF THE SEED ON A NAIL FILE/EMORY BOARD OR ON CONCRETE UNTIL A SMALL AMOUNT OF THE OUTER BROWNISH COATING HAS BEEN RUBBED OFF. BEST NOT TO RUB THE ENDS OF THE SEED. THEN SOAK A LITTLE MORE TO SEE IF EMBRYO SWELLS.

NORMAL GERMINATION IS 4-6 WEEKS

MAKE SURE YOU DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST TO SEE HOW THIS TREE WILL GROW IN YOUR AREA.

DO NOT PLANT NEAR STRUCTURES. MAKES A GREAT CENTERPIECE PLANT.

NON EDIBLE - DO NOT CONFUSE WITH Enterolobium cyclocarpum WHICH ALSO SHARES SOME OF THE SAME COMMON NAMES AND PHYSICAL FEATURES.

HAPPY GARDENING

Story of this Seed:

I GREW UP WITH THESE TREES, THEY GREW IN MY GRANDMOTHER'S BACK YARD. WE OFTEN MAKE CRAFTS FROM THE PODS.
